Living in Costa Rica
Jaco vs. Herradura vs. Playa Hermosa: Where to Live

Jaco, Herradura and Playa Hermosa sit within about 20 minutes of each other on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast, yet each one feels like a different place to live. If you’re thinking about buying a home, a condo or a vacation rental here, choosing the right community matters as much as choosing the right property.
We’ve lived on this coast for years and know these towns day to day, not just from a weekend visit. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide where to focus your search.
Why the Central Pacific?
Before comparing towns, it helps to know why so many buyers start here. The Central Pacific is the closest beach region to San José: Jaco is about an hour and a half from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) via Route 27. That makes it easy to fly in for a long weekend, receive visiting family, or reach the city for appointments and shopping. You also have year-round services: supermarkets, restaurants, medical clinics, schools and reliable internet in most areas. You can browse everything we currently have on our Central Pacific real estate page.
Jaco: Walkable Beach-Town Living

Jaco is the region’s main beach town and the most convenient place to live day to day. The long, dark-sand beach runs along the whole town, with restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, banks, gyms and shops a short walk or bike ride away. The surf is friendly for beginners and intermediate surfers, and there’s an active local community alongside visitors from around the world.
Who it suits: people who want to walk to the beach and to dinner, part-time owners who like a lock-and-leave condo, and investors who want strong vacation-rental demand.
What to know: Jaco is lively, especially on weekends and holidays. If you want quiet nights, look at the north and south ends of town, the hills above, or a building with good soundproofing.
Typical properties: ocean-view condos and penthouses, townhomes, and larger pool homes that work well as group rentals, like Casa Sundeck and Casa Mango. See all Jaco real estate.
Herradura and Los Sueños: Marina, Golf and a Calm Bay

Just north of Jaco, Herradura sits on a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay. Its calm water makes it great for swimming, paddleboarding and boating. Herradura is home to Los Sueños Resort & Marina, with its marina, sportfishing fleet, golf course and gated residential communities.
Who it suits: buyers who want a polished, quieter setting with resort amenities, boat owners and anglers, and families who value gated security.
What to know: prices inside Los Sueños are among the highest on the coast, and HOA fees reflect the amenities. Outside the resort, Herradura has a more local, residential feel, and Jaco’s shops and restaurants are about 10 minutes away by car.
Typical properties: marina-view and golf condos, villas in gated communities, and homes in the hills with views over the bay. See Herradura & Los Sueños real estate.
Playa Hermosa: Surf and a Slower Pace

About 10 minutes south of Jaco, Playa Hermosa is a long, open beach known for powerful, consistent waves. It has hosted national and international surf competitions, and much of the community revolves around the ocean. Part of the beach is protected as a wildlife refuge where sea turtles nest.
Who it suits: surfers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants space and quiet while staying close to Jaco’s services.
What to know: the waves here are strong, so it’s better for experienced swimmers and surfers than for small children. Services are more limited, so most residents drive into Jaco for groceries and errands.
Typical properties: beach houses, surf-style homes and lots, often with more land than in Jaco. See Playa Hermosa real estate.
Bonus: Bijagual and the Hills Above the Coast
If you want views and cooler air, look up. Bijagual sits in the hills inland from Herradura, a short drive from the coast. You’ll find larger lots, mountain and ocean views, waterfalls and a much quieter pace. It’s a favorite area for people who want to build. Our guide to buying land in Costa Rica covers what to check first, and you can see options on our Bijagual real estate page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jaco a good place to live full time?
Yes, for many people. Jaco has the most complete set of services on the Central Pacific: supermarkets, banks, clinics, gyms, schools nearby and plenty of restaurants. Many full-time residents choose homes at the quieter ends of town or in the hills, and enjoy walking into town for the beach and dinner.
Is Herradura quieter than Jaco?
Yes. Herradura is mostly residential, and Los Sueños is a gated resort community with a calmer, more polished feel. You trade some walkability for quiet, but Jaco’s shops and restaurants are only about 10 minutes away by car.
Can you swim at Playa Hermosa?
Playa Hermosa is known for strong waves and currents, so it’s best for experienced swimmers and surfers. For calm-water swimming, Herradura’s sheltered bay is the better choice, and Jaco’s beach is calmer on smaller swell days.
Which area is best for a vacation rental investment?
Jaco has the strongest overall rental demand thanks to its beach, restaurants and short drive from the airport. Los Sueños attracts higher-end stays and sportfishing groups. Results always depend on the specific property, the building’s rules and good local management, so it’s worth talking to an experienced property manager before you buy.
How far is each area from the airport?
Jaco is about an hour and a half from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) via Route 27. Herradura is a few minutes closer, and Playa Hermosa a few minutes farther. Bijagual adds a short drive inland from Herradura.
Do I need a car?
In central Jaco, many residents get by walking, cycling or using taxis. In Herradura, Playa Hermosa and Bijagual, a car makes daily life much easier, and in the hills a 4×4 is helpful during the rainy season.
