Rainforest, Wildlife and Gulf Views

Tarcoles is a small coastal district just north of Herradura, known for its fishing village, the crocodile bridge over the Tarcoles River and Carara National Park—one of the best places in Costa Rica to see scarlet macaws. Inland, Ruta 320 climbs into green hills toward Bijagual, where homes sit on larger lots surrounded by rainforest, with views over the Gulf of Nicoya.

Before you buy here, confirm road access, water and zoning for the specific property. Our guide to buying land in Costa Rica covers what to check first.

Tarcoles FAQs

How far is Tarcoles from the beach?

Tarcoles sits just north of Herradura, so Los Sueños, Herradura and Jaco are a short drive south on the coastal highway (Route 34). Homes up along Ruta 320 are further inland, so check the drive time to any property you’re considering.

Do I need a 4x4 in Tarcoles?

The main roads are paved, but some side roads and driveways in the hills are steep or unpaved. A higher-clearance or 4x4 vehicle makes life easier, especially in the rainy season.

Is there water and electricity in Tarcoles?

Most homes have electricity and water service, but in the hills some properties also rely on storage tanks, pumps or wells. Always confirm water availability in writing before you buy.

How far is Tarcoles from San José?

Tarcoles is on the way to the coast from San José via Route 27, so it’s a little closer to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) than Jaco. Drive times vary with traffic and the exact location of the property.
